Caldwell Middle School Author Residency Day 1 – Monday, January 7, 2013

Today was my first day at Caldwell Middle School doing a writing residency with the fourth grade students. First, I taught the students how to make a six page book out of a single sheet of paper using origami, the Japanese art of paper-folding.

Using my book, The Little “Read” Hen, The students learned the six step process of creating a story: brainstorming, researching, outlining, drafting, editing, and proofing. Each of these steps was demonstrated and documented in their six-page origami book.

I told the story from my book using the Smart Board.

Ms. Guidry, one of the fourth-grade teachers, started “winging it.” What a cool chick! :)

I saw six fourth-grade classes for 45 minutes each. It was a full, fun day!

I look forward to continuing the writing process with the students and seeing their creativity blossom!

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne
